例えば、スポーツのような競技としてその順位を争う場合は、1は「勝ち」で0は「負け」である。それは1位になった人だけが「1」であり、残りの敗者は総て「0」になるのである。もちろん、2位や3位になった人たちだって素晴らしいし、その努力は誇りにすべきだ。しかし、結果的に2位以下に甘んじても、彼らだって「1」（優勝）を目指していたはずである。田村（谷）選手の名言、「最高でも金、最低でも金」は、「1」にこだわるトップアスリートの不屈の精神の表れだろう。
