知の統合化プロジェクト
「知の統合化プロジェクト」と聞くと、なんとも響きがいい。僕の目指しているコンセプトを一部言い当てているようにも思える。小宮山総長の「知の構造化」を推進するための一大プロジェクトとして、昨年から工学・情報系を中心に動いているようだ。その中でも特に、人間を対象とした生命科学の知識を体系化しようというねらいがこの「統合化プロジェクト」にある。
しかし、その方法論を見たらなんと思うだろう。現在、新領域研究科の高木教授がリーダーとして、プロジェクトを推進しているようだが、その統合手法は『自然言語のオントロジー』である。オントロジーとは哲学的には「存在論」のこと、工学的には、「体系化された存在に関する記述」を意味する。ようは、概念的な物事を明確な「言葉」を使って「分類・表現」するということである。
オントロジーの原義的な意味も、納得のいかない部分があるが、ここは許容して話を進めよう。確かに科学の最終的な結果を記述するためには「言語」が必要である。ほとんどの自然科学の論文は英語という「自然言語」を用いて記載されている。僕らは、星の数ほどある論文の中から、必要な情報を抽出し、自分の研究活動に応用しているわけである。
科学の研究成果は「自然言語」として論文に発表されているから、それらの論文上にある『自然言語のオントロジー』を構築しよう。簡単に言えば、このような目標を掲げて、「知の統合化プロジェクト」は動いていることになる。でも、これでは、ただの情報整理で終わってしまうのではないかという危惧が消えない。この「プロジェクト」は生命科学百科事典の亜種をつくることが目的なのだろうか。
上記のようなオントロジーが確立すれば、人間が論文を読まなくても、その内容をコンピューターが大方予想できるようになる。「自然言語」の解釈を機械にさせることで、人間による情報の取りこぼしが無くなるかもしれない。しかし、生命の本質を理解するにはあまり有効な手段になるとは思わないのだ。なぜなら、その「知の構造化」は「自然言語」を基にして作られたからだ。
論文は否応無しに「自然言語」で書かれているだけだ。生命の高次機能を明らかにするなら、分子や細胞の構造や位置関係を明確にし、時間によってそれらの活動がどのように変化するかを考慮すべきだ。さらには、生命が「モノ」だけで成り立っているわけは無い。ある性質を持った「場」の影響も記述すべきではないだろうか。そのようなデータを集めてきて初めて、意味のある新しい知識が生まれるんじゃないのか。そうじゃなきゃ、そんな膨大な情報を集める気にはとてもなれない。
知を体系化することに文句は無い。百科事典も役に立つ。しかし、学問を体系化する真の理由を見失ってはいけない。理想的には、知を体系化することで、新しい知が創発され、生命をより深く理解することができるようになることを望んでいるわけだから…。
