べき乗の法則
遺伝学研究所から小笠原さんが来て、うちの研究室でセミナーを行った。彼は進化に興味があって、進化の数理モデルを組み立てている。もともとは数学が好きだったらしい。遺伝子の発現量はジップの法則に当てはまることを、そこの研究室のボスが見出していて、じゃぁ、ジップの法則が成り立つ生物学的基盤は何なのかという問いに答える研究をしていた。彼の考えたモデル式は非常にシンプルで、ある世代tに発現している遺伝子の発現量をGi(t)と定義し、その次の世代における遺伝子の発現量は、そのGi(t)にランダムな係数Ci(t)を掛けたものになるというものだ。そのGi(t)の中にはダイナミックレンジが組み込まれているようなのだが、一体どういう形でそれが表現できるのかいまいちよく分からなかった。同じモデルの式を立てていたとしても、それを解釈する角度が違うと全く異なるモデルになってしまうのが理論の世界。細胞内の酵素反応で同じような式のモデルが成り立つらしいのだが、そのモデル式に突然変異が遺伝子機能にあまり依存しないで起こる進化を適用したのは彼が始めてらしい。経験則であるジップの法則を成り立たせている生物学的な本質を見極める作業は難しい。それに果敢に挑戦している姿を見て、僕は結構うれしく思えた。ジップの法則の次はスモールワールドネットワークか。このネットワークが実現する生物学的根拠には僕もかなり関心がある。インターネットの世界だけでなく、ニューロンのつながり方にも関係してくるからだ。
